How Often Should You Really Wash Your Hair?

"Wash your hair every day" — or "never wash it more than once a week." The advice is everywhere and it's completely contradictory. The truth is, there's no universal answer — the right wash frequency depends entirely on your hair type, scalp, and lifestyle. Here's how to figure out what's right for you.

Why Wash Frequency Matters

Washing too often strips your scalp of natural oils (sebum), leading to dryness, irritation, and overproduction of oil as your scalp tries to compensate. Washing too infrequently allows buildup of sebum, product, and dead skin cells — which can clog follicles and slow growth.

The goal is to find the frequency that keeps your scalp clean and balanced without stripping it.

By Hair Type: How Often to Wash

Fine / Straight Hair

Fine hair gets oily fastest because sebum travels down the smooth, straight shaft quickly. Most people with fine, straight hair need to wash every 1–2 days. Dry shampoo can extend this slightly.

Medium / Wavy Hair

Wavy hair falls in the middle. Sebum travels more slowly down the wavy shaft, so washing every 2–3 days is usually ideal. Pay attention to how your scalp feels — that's your best guide.

Thick / Coarse Hair

Thick, coarse hair is naturally drier because sebum has a harder time traveling down the shaft. Washing once a week or even every 10–14 days is often sufficient and healthier for this hair type.

Curly / Coily Hair

Curly and coily hair is the driest hair type because the tight curl pattern makes it nearly impossible for sebum to travel from root to tip. Washing every 1–2 weeks is standard. Co-washing (conditioner-only washing) between shampoo sessions helps maintain moisture.

Color-Treated Hair

Color-treated hair is more porous and loses moisture faster. Wash less frequently (every 3–4 days minimum) and always use color-safe, sulfate-free shampoo to preserve color and moisture.

Signs You're Washing Too Often

  • Scalp feels tight or itchy after washing
  • Hair looks dull and feels dry despite conditioning
  • Scalp becomes oily very quickly after washing (overcompensation)
  • Color fades faster than expected

Signs You're Not Washing Enough

  • Scalp itches or flakes persistently
  • Hair feels heavy, greasy, or has an odor
  • Products don't seem to work as well
  • Increased shedding (clogged follicles)

The Best Approach: Listen to Your Scalp

Your scalp will tell you when it needs washing. Start with the frequency recommended for your hair type, then adjust based on how your scalp feels. If it feels oily and uncomfortable after 2 days, wash more often. If it feels fine after 5 days, you can stretch it further.

Washing Extensions: Different Rules Apply

If you're wearing hair extensions, the rules change. Extensions don't receive sebum from your scalp, so they need less frequent washing — but more intentional moisture. Our Natural Black Deep Wave Bundles and Body Wave Bundles should be washed every 1–2 weeks with a sulfate-free shampoo and deep conditioned after every wash to maintain their softness and longevity.
